Elegant Corpse

Playing on the Exquisite Corpse technique, originally developed by Surrealist artists, you are invited to collaborate on the embroidery hoops provided. Throughout the run of the Articulate Residency project I’ll be adding new hoops with a graffiti inspired text for inspiration as well as refreshing needlepoint supplies.  You are encouraged and invited to pick up needle and thread and add to this project.   Other collaborative projects are coming to this studio space over the next few weeks so please check back in.

If you’re new to this medium I’m delighted to show you how to stitch if I’m in the studio or you can check out this handy video…. https://t.ly/oB4Rt

At the RiNo Art Park

Previous to this installation, I’ve worked with several graffiti artists including Risa Friedman, Yazz Atmore, and Wiser Owner bringing importing images from some of their work onto smaller canvasses for needlepoint workshops in Denver and Boulder. In my own work, I’ve transcribed graffitti from passing trains onto canvasses for embroidered and beaded work.

Graffitti art in general is my favorite type of collaborative work. Rather than being religated and curated by a gallery on high, the paint, wheatpaste, slaps and stencils are often done spontainously, sometimes in the dead of night. Artists collaborate together and one wall can become a conversation over time. With train cars we see these enormous galleries travling through towns and farmlands with the artists never knowing where their contributions will end up.
